Materials Study of Housewares

for my thesis I wanted to explore materials in housewares. to do this I made three sets of three products. each set using a different material: acrylic, sheet metal, or wood, and each set contains a side table, a plant stand, and a candle holder. I chose these three specific products to test the materials at various scales. ultimately, I made nine objects.

The Basics

I wanted to explore how people interact with or perceive objects based on their materials. I chose the same form for all three materials to get a clearer understanding of this. additionally, I wanted to learn more about the processes of getting the same shape out of different materials. overall, I wanted to explore if products could be seen in a new way by changing their material.

my user group is young people living in a big city. many first homes include furniture cobbled together from various pasts such as an aunts old couch or a cousins coffee table. my user is looking for more cohesion in their home, and would like useful, but fun pieces of furniture to give their home style without taking up too much space.

Ideation

a major part of my design process is ideation. i had to figure out what products would be best for this project, and then what forms would be best for each product. I wanted the three items to fit together but also to be able to stand alone. essentially, i wanted someone to be able to walk into a store, see the three together, and buy one, two or all three of the items for their home. no matter which item(s) they chose, i wanted their space to be elevated because of this family of products.

here are some sketchies to satiate your needs of seeing some forms I explored. part of this process was working with the wood shop and metal shop guys and seeing which forms would be feasible for me to make at school. I understand that some of these limitations exist in the real world as well, so this was a good exercise for me to consider manufacturing processes.

The Process

I started by making an MDF mold which all three tables used to make the sizing more standardized. the wood used it the most elaborately however, as I used the vacuum bag and pump to help laminate the wood veneers in the right shape. one challenge was that I did not have wide enough veneers to create a cross grain which caused warping. the bag did successfully generate the shape I wanted, the corners were just not as high fidelity as large scale manufacturing could have made it. this process was incredibly successful in helping me learn and study how this material is produced, even though it did not produce higher quality results.
